  7.  The Ummo case : UFO manipulation in Europe

  9.  During January '66, several Spanish citizens from Madrid received
  10.  anonymous letters mailed from Spain, but also from all over the world:
  11.  Australia, Canada, Switzerland, West-Berlin, etc...
  12.  These letters, which never mentioned the adress of the sender, carried
  13.  the following stamp :

  17.   This is the stamp of a so-called "Unified government of the planet
  18.   Ummo", and the letters were signed by a so-called "extraterrestrial
  19.   expeditionary group" on a mission on Earth, and especially in Spain.
  20.   The most important characteristic of these letters was that they
  21.   contained, amongst unverifiable scientific topics, lots of clearly
  22.   anti-Franco, anti-American, pro-communist statements.

  24.   Some letters from Ummo (Ummo case consists of thousands of letters !)
  25.   had been brought to the attention of the Spanish population thanks to
  26.   the Spanish press, radio  and TV, and to the recipients. Some of them
  27.   wrote books dealing with Ummo:

  29.         "Ummo : Another Inhabited Planet"          Fernando Sesma, 1967
  30.         "Looking Toward The Edge Of The Universe"  Father Enrique Lopez 
  31.                                                      Guerrero, 1968 
  32.         "The Ummo Mystery"                         Antonio Ribera, 1975

  34.   The recipients had also created an association called ERIDANI, 
  35.   in order to study the Ummo case.

  37.   After 1975 and Franco's death, the letters were rarer, but they
  38.   continued to denounce the USA, capitalism, American military policy, 
  39.   etc... Since the eighties, some Spanish and French ufologists have 
  40.   strongly suspected that Ummo was a political manipulation and that 
  41.   Mr. Jose Luis Jordan Pena, the chairman of ERIDANI (!), was the 
  42.   principal author of the mystification. But he strongly denied it.

  44.   In April '93, Mr. Jose Luis Jordan Pena admitted for the very first
  45.   time his guilt. He made the following statement to some Spanish
  46.   journalists and ufologists : 
  47.   
  48.         "I am the man who has written the letters from Ummo." 
  49.   
  50.   But he absolutely refused to talk about his motive, his goals, and 
  51.   the political aspects of the case. The French UFO network SOS OVNI 
  52.   has published in its magazine Phenomena some papers about the 
  53.   political aspects of Ummo and Jose Luis Jordan Pena. An investigator 
  54.   of SOS OVNI has also published a book titled:

  56.         "Ummo Case : The Extraterrestrials Who Came In From The Cold"

  58.   Today, the inquiry is still on-going. Here are some of the first 
  59.   recipients of the letters in Spain (1966):

  61.         Fernando Sesma : ufologist and esoterist.
  62.         Alicia Araujo : secretary of the USA Embassy
  63.         Dionisio Garrido : policeman
  64.         Antonio Ribera : journalist and writer
  65.         Raphael Farriols : chairman of industry
  66.   
  67.   Here are two typical statements of Ummo :

  69.         1966 : "Mr Sesma, you are a man unknown in the scientific 
  70.         field and in the  philosophical field, but you are a courageous 
  71.         and independant man in a  country internationally reputed as 
  72.         the most backward country in Europe, lead by a dictatorial 
  73.         government connected with nazi and fascist experiences. Your 
  74.         country is suffering from the opressions forbiding all 
  75.         scientific, technological and ideological developments. 
  76.         All the great intellectuals are in exile or have been punished 
  77.         with death by the oligarchs like Garcia Lorca."

  79.         1987 : "Gorbatchev is clever and honest (...) Marxism is the 
  80.         best political way (...) AIDS has been created by the US Army."
